Hi all!

I'm new to CHUM. It was introduced to me by Sharknado, Nicole, rakpix & Heidi Ho when we met in Sea Center Texas on Saturday, June 25, during "Get Into Your Sanctuary" day. Although I've been living in Houston area for more than 34 years and SCUBA diving for more than 11 years, it was embarrassing to admit that it was my first time to hear about CHUM.

Most my diving buddies are from Brazosport Underwater Club (BUC) in Lake Jackson area, where I live & where the Sea Center Texas is located. In fact BUC meets on 2nd Wednesday of every months in the Sea Center Texas' conference room. Although BUC is a small dive club, we have every thing we need as far as SCUBA diving world. We have pretty active members who organize trips, set up monthly meetings, write monthly newsletters, etc. We have local dive site, the Mammoth Lake & local dive shop, the Maximum Scuba. To dive in the sea, the Fling is only 15 minutes drive away to Freeport harbor. So, I never bother searching other dive club.

After browsing the CHUM website & reading some of the discussions in your Forums, I'm impressed with the organization, diversities, expertise & enthusiasms of many of the CHUM club members. I felt like a man, living under a rock, just came out to see the world. So, I went ahead & signed up as a new CHUM member.

I'm from Indonesia. Hopefully I can also contribute & help to provide some advises to CHUM members who are interested in diving in Indonesia. Is there any other CHUM member from Indonesia?

Here is a bit of my diving background. In 2005, a good buddy of mine at work, who is a dive instructor, introduced me to SCUBA diving. I liked it so much & got SSI OW in 2005, followed by SSI Nitrox in 2006, PADI AOW in 2013 and logging in average 50 dives / year.

For the first few years, I went with BUC dive trips to several dive sites in US & Caribbean, including Flower Gardens, Florida Keys, Cayman Brac, Cancun, Cabo, Bonaire, Utila & Tobago. As I gained more experience, I started to travel further away to the country where I was born, Indonesia, diving in several great dive sites there including Bali, Komodo, WaKaToBi, Bunaken, Lembeh, Alor, Nabucco, Cendrawasih Bay & Raja Ampat.

I dove in Zanzibar & Pemba (Tanzania side) a couple years ago, but not too impressed. I guess I got spoiled with diving in Indonesia.

I plan to dive in Great Barrier Reef in November & in Galapagos in December. I'll see how they are compared with Indonesia.

Hi Dan! Selamat datang untuk CHUM! CHUM is a great group of people. And they are nice enough to even let me join and hang out with them.

I am not FROM Indonesia but did live in Jakarta from 1985-87. I loved the diving there and managed to get out and around at least once a month if not twice!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Terima kasih, dutch! I'm glad to know someone here that knows above & under water of Indonesia. Wow, you have been diving for a long time. Hopefully we can bump into each other over there in one of these days. Take care!

I may have been diving a while but never often enough! I will be in Houston in October/November for about 2 weeks and will have some sort of "do", meet-up or whatever for my dive buddies there. Watch these pages...

Getting back into diving!

Hi all!

My name is Mark. I got my dive certification back in college, but haven't really gone much since then. I have a coworker that got his certification and got me interested in going diving again. Good thing is my parents kept my scuba gear in my old bedroom. So it looks like it is in real good shape. Hopefully I can manage time with the wife and my child enough to be able to get out and dive now. I look forward to getting to know and hopefully doing some dives with you all as well!

Welcome Mark307,

You came to the right place! We have people diving all the time, keep an eye out for the DIVE Buddy postings or suggest a time yourself. We even have postings for gear if you find yourself at a loss. :)

Thought I would introduce myself, my name is Eric Therkildsen and I am a current PADI MSDT and PADI PSD Instructor. I have been diving since 1998 and love it.

I met some of you at the June 2016 meeting where I spoke on behalf of the HPD Dive team. I currently do not get to dive much for pleasure except in the cold months due to family and work keeping me very busy. I hope to attend a few meetings and get to know more of you and hopefully get out and dive other than for work or teaching. DIving is truly passion of mine and I am always open to share my knowledge an learn. I look forward to learning more about the group and THANKS for the warm welcome we received at the June meeting.

Hello,

New diver here. Just got my certification a week or so ago in La Jolla, CA. I'll be bouncing back and forth between Houston and La Jolla. So cold, warm, cold, warm lol. I plan to get as many dives done as I can whenever I travel out to CA to see my family, which should be easy since I am 10 minutes from shore, have my own gear, and a dedicated dive buddy in CA... But as for here I am not really sure where to begin since it seems the only real way to get out there is via boat trips to rigs.

I figured CHUM would be a good place to make friends, plans, learn, dive, etc. I've got a wide range of ocean interests but my primary goal is learning my way up to wrecks and caves... and maybe poking and eating a few lionfish here and there.

It's only myself and mah beautiful brindle lab so I am pretty flexible on potential group activities. :)

Of which, I believe the next meeting is this Thursday @ Jake's bar.

New to CHUM - Introduction

Hello,

I am new to CHUM and happy to have found this club. My name is Flor Vergara, moved to Houston a year ago from Miami. I got certified in 1998 in Nicaragua and have enjoyed diving all this time.

Since our move, we still have to venture and experience the Texas diving. Looking forward to getting good tips from all of you.
